Nail Polish as a LocTite Replacement.

Can you Use Nail Polish as a Thread Lock?

Materials Used

1 piece of 2x1" Wood

9 x M6 Carriage Bolt

9 x M6 Square Head Nut

18 x M6 Washer

9 x M6 Hex Nut

9 x M6 Wing Nut

8 x Nail Polish




Test Rules

Each Bolt is threaded through a hole drilled into the Wood

A Square Nut is added and then tightened down to clamp it against the wood.

A Washer is placed over the Bolt on top of the Square Nut.

Some Nail Polish is applied to the Thread and a Standard Nut is Tightened down 1 Quarter turn onto the Washer.

Another Washer is placed on top of the Standard Nut.

Some Nail Polish is added to the Thread and a Wing Nut is tightened down onto the washer Finger tight.

The Experiment is left over night for the Nail Polish to fully cure.

Control Rules

The Control Test will be followed in the same way but no Nail Polish will be added to the threads.

Nail Polish Selection.

1. Rimmel London - 60 Second Little Bo Peep (Matt)

2. Rimmel London - 60 Second Purple Reign (Metallic)

3. Rimmel London - Crack Your Colour Black Graffiti (Special Effect)

4. Rimmel London - Rita Ora Roll in the Grass (Gloss)

5. Cien - Red Roses (Gloss)

6. Kriston - Perfect Finish Black (Gloss)

7. Kriston - Perfect Finish White (Matt)

8. Natural Collection - Pink (Gloss)

Experiment Results.

While the Nail Polish as a whole did provide some Extra Bond with the threads all but one was uninspiring.

Rimmel London - All Colours performed about the same while the Crack your Colour being a really welcome surprise, More on that at the end.
While they do add extra "Grab" it was only a little better than the Control.

Kriston Cien performed a little better than the Rimmel but not good enough for me to Suggest one long term unless in a pinch and its all you have.

The Natural Collection sold by Boots in the UK gave a surprising result considering it is a very cheap bargain brand. Out performing all but one of its contenders. Natural Collection would be cheap enough to to buy in a pinch or people on really tight budgets.

Now we get to the fun part.. and the winner is .......

Rimmel London - Crack your Colour - Black Graffiti

Although probably one of the more expensive of the ones I tested this out performed all the other massively.
It Grabbed the threads and didn't want to let go but gave with enough force that it wouldn't break a smaller part if used.
Both tests needed  some force to break the seal and more testing will be done as to how much force is needed in the next experiment.

Conclusion

So in conclusion my recommendation if you can find it is Crack your Colour by Rimmel London or if you are on a low budget Natural Collection.
